Official membership of our denomination (which is legally incorporated as the General Church of the New Jerusalem, or General Church) is made up of those who have chosen to be baptized by a New Church pastor, and subscribe to the principles and purposes of the General Church.
Membership is individual, and is not limited by race, nationality, or geography.
One becomes an official member of a particular society (i.e. congregation) by first becoming a member of the General Church and then by signing the roll of membership of that society.
Joining the General Church
Membership is an opportunity to formalize your commitment to the Church.
Many people are connected to the New Church and the Writings of Swedenborg, but have not formally joined The General Church of the New Jerusalem. We invite you to join our organization and spiritual community, thereby formalizing your commitment to doing the Lord's work on earth. Of course, you are always welcome to participate in our worship services whether or not you have not taken these formal steps.
While we are known as the New Church, our denomination is legally known and incorporated under the name of General Church of the New Jerusalem (or General Church for short). We have many congregations, or societies, around the world (you can view these in our locations directory at our main website, www.newchurch.org/contact/locations. While you don't have to be a member of the General Church to attend church or participate in many of the activities of our societies, joining the General Church provides the greatest opportunities to engage in the life of the church. For example, General Church membership is a prerequisite to official membership in a local society, and official society members can participate on their society's leadership Board (contact your local society pastor for society member information). Members of the General Church also have the opportunity to vote in the affirmation process of a newly nominated head bishop.
If you would like to become a member of the General Church, you must:
- be 20 years old;
- be baptized into the New Church and
- agree with the purpose and principles of the General Church.
You may download and complete the application for membership form and mail it to the Office of the Bishop, PO Box 743, Bryn Athyn, PA, USA 19009-0708, or you may submit the form below.
